Methodology & Data Sources

How we built this dashboard.

Data Sources
All data comes from Analyze Boston (data.boston.gov), the City of Boston's open data portal.

Datasets used:
• Crime Incident Reports (2023–2025)
• 311 Service Requests (2023–2025)
• Vision Zero Crash Records (2023–2025)
• Building & Property Violations (2023–2025)
• Boston Neighborhood Boundaries (BPDA, 2020 Census Tract-based)
Safety Score Methodology
Each neighborhood is ranked #1 (fewest concerns) to #23 (most concerns) in four categories: Crime, 311 Complaints, Crashes, and Violations. Rankings are based on per-capita rates (incidents per 1,000 residents).

Overall rank weights:
• Crime: 40%
• 311 Complaints: 25%
• Crashes: 20%
• Violations: 15%

Population estimates are from the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) Research Division, January 2025.
Caveats & Limitations
• Neighborhoods with very small residential populations (Harbor Island, South Boston Waterfront, Longwood, West End) may show exaggerated per-capita rates due to high daytime activity relative to resident count. These are marked with an asterisk (*).
• Crime and 311 data reflect reported incidents, not necessarily all incidents.
• Neighborhood boundaries are defined by the BPDA using 2020 Census tract approximations. Some records near borders may be assigned to adjacent neighborhoods.
• This dashboard covers the City of Boston only. Surrounding cities (Cambridge, Brookline, Somerville) are separate municipalities and not included.
• This dashboard is for informational purposes and should not be the sole basis for housing or safety decisions.
